Queen Lady Gaga’s mother, Cynthia, wrote a SWEET, TOUCHING letter about Gaga and the millions of young people who feel like freaks. It is a MUST-READ

Lady Gaga‘s mother Cynthia Germanotta penned a very powerful, beautiful essay about raising her unique daughter, and why it’s time for an “emotional revolution.”

Nicknamed “Mother Monster,” Gaga is something of a matriarch for her fans and those who feel different or weird in mainstream society. After all, at her concerts, Gaga’s voice rings out “Baby, you were born this way” to the cheers and cries of fans. And Gaga’s made it no secret that when she was growing up, she felt like a “freak.”

For example, she once told Barbara Walters, “I aspire to try to be a teacher to my young fans … who feel just like I felt when I was younger. … I felt like a freak. I guess, what I’m trying to say is, I want to liberate them, I want to free them of their fears and make them feel … that they can create their own space in the world.”
Now Gaga is unquestionably one of the biggest and most talented names in music, and she’ll forever be ingrained in the history of pop culture as a fascinating, beautiful, and unparalleled icon. So how did Stefani Germanotta become Lady Gaga? Her mother responds in this new essay for The Daily Beast (April 15, 2015).

Her essay begins:

As a mom, it’s difficult to watch your child struggle. Whether the obstacles your child faces are physical, academic, or social, you want to do everything you can to help. But too often as a parent, you feel like you don’t have the tools you need to guide your child through the difficult experiences we all encounter growing up. This is particularly acute when the problems your son or daughter grapples with are emotional.

When my daughter Stefani—who most people know as Lady Gaga—was a child, she had to learn painful lessons about the dangers of cruelty and the importance of kindness. She was creative and unequivocally her own person, but her peers didn’t always appreciate the things that made her unique—and different. As a result, they would sometimes taunt, humiliate, or exclude her. It was hurtful for her to experience and heartbreaking for me to watch.
She continues to discuss the ways in which emotional abuse of Gaga’s peers affected her later in life, ultimately to inspire so many young people through her power of music and influence:

But this mean-spirited treatment did more than sting in the moment—it shook Stefani’s confidence. The persistent, thoughtless cruelty of her peers caused Stefani to question her identity and self-worth. That self-doubt, in turn, led to anxiety, depression, and destructive behavior. What in isolation may have been viewed as casually dispensed insults or “harmless pranks” accumulated over time, causing a ripple effect that ate away at her emotional well-being.

As difficult as those times were, however, they have enabled my daughter to bond with the millions of young people she has interacted with and impacted through her music. So many of these “Little Monsters” have endured similar situations and experienced similar feelings—from depression and loneliness to humiliation and frustration. We heard from young people around the country, and around the world, who felt like their voices weren’t being heard and their feelings weren’t being respected.
Today, Germanotta is the President of the Born This Way Foundation, which strives to empower youths and inspire bravery. Their mission explains the “Born This Way Foundation is committed to supporting the wellness of young people and empowering them to create a kinder and braver world. We achieve this by shining a light on real people, quality research, and authentic partnerships.”

Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill’s ‘Fairy Tale Wedding’ Will Probably Happen ‘Sooner Rather Than Later’

With news of Nicki Minaj‘s (probable) engagement, we can’t help but start hearing wedding bells… And apparently, she can’t either!
In fact, Minaj and Meek Mill will probably end up getting married quicker than we expect — similar to their whirlwind engagement after only dating for four months.

A source tells E! News, “The wedding will likely happen sooner rather then later, it’s just how their relationship has been going. Nicki has been waiting for this special day for some time and Meek wants to make it perfect and a fairy tale come true for her. This is such an exciting time in her life.”

And as for the engagement? “The way this went down was more personal and private between them,” the insider adds.

Something way less secret, though, is her massive engagement ring she shared on Instagram yesterday. In the shape of a heart with yellow and white diamonds, jewelry experts are estimating it probably cost Meek Mill somewhere around $500K.

With a ring like that, we can only imagine what the wedding will entail!

Ciara Talks About Jackie

In January, Ciara gave fans a first taste of her new album Jackie with the emotional “I Bet,” a personal track about her very public breakup with the rapper Future. Despite the single’s intimate tone, the rest of the album, which is named after her mother, has a more upbeat sound. “It came from me wanting people to dance and groove,” says the singer, who names Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra, and Sade as her sources of musical inspiration. “I have always wanted to make this kind of album.” Here, she explains how she came up with the album’s title, what fans can expect, and more.

Why did you decide to name the album after your mom?
I felt like it was the best title for where I am in my life right now. Being a mom, I can now see the world through her eyes and fully understand what she was thinking. Being a mom has changed me forever.

How is Jackie different from your previous albums?
I am so much more expressive and confident than I have ever been in my life. Even though there has been musical and personal growth, this album really takes me back in time, to when I didn’t overthink the creative process. Before, I would have said Goodies was my favorite album, but now I believe Jackie is my best body of work.

What most excites you about releasing this album?

The album release is May 4th, and the tour starts May 3rd. This is my first tour in six years, and I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again! It’s going to be a great time.

What do you want to tell your fans?
I want you to feel realness, feel happiness, and all the positive energy I have in my life right now. But most importantly, I hope you play the album over and over.

Pre-order Ciara’s new album Jackie starting today. The album will be released on May 4th, and Ciara will be on tour from May 3rd to May 31st.

The Awkward Black Girl Who Is Going To Change Television

Issa Rae stands strong, arms akimbo, on the jacket of her new memoir, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.”

By most measures in entertainment, she is a wonder woman. Nearly 25 million views of her YouTube videos. New York Times best-seller status for her debut book. A greenlit pilot for HBO. She is collaborating with Shonda Rhimes and Instagram’ing with Oprah.

Such feats are not achieved by awkwardness alone. Like the projects she produces, Issa Rae is endearing and quirky and earnestly self-aware.

She is now focused on her most ambitious goal yet: to diversify television from the inside out. She explained her philosophy during an interview with HuffPost Live’s Marc Lamont Hill:

Until you have people in positions of power that have varied experiences, nothing will change. Honestly, we’re not on [television executives’] radar. They don’t know. They’re not really thinking about us. If you have people in positions of power that don’t have very many black friends, that don’t really understand the black experience, they’re not thinking about it and there are not enough people concerned with it… Social media changed the game in that you’re seeing all of these tweets, you’re seeing all these trending topics from…black people who are expressing what they want to see. Now people take notice.

Vogue Paris’ May 2015 Issue Features The Magazine’s First Black Cover Model In 5 Years

We don’t know if we should be happy or sad to share that Liya Kebede has landed the May 2015 cover of Vogue Paris, because it marks the first time in five years that a black model has graced the cover of the glossy.

According to Fashionista.com, model Rose Cordero was the last person of color to cover Vogue Paris back in March 2010. The bittersweet news also comes just two months after we were shocked to learn that Jourdan Dunn’s February 2015 cover of Vogue UK was the first time a black model has covered the publication solo in 12 years.

The lack of diversity within the fashion industry continues to be a pressing issue. Efforts have been made by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and its international counterparts to encourage diversity on the runways. However, little progress has been made. Couple that with racially insensitive instances like the use of blackface in fashion editorials or fashion leaders using the N-word, and it’s clear what a huge problem the industry is dealing with.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t take Vogue Paris another half a decade to realize that diversity is beautiful.

Tina Knowles Weds Boyfriend Richard Lawson

Nearly two years ago, we were so tickled to see Tina Knowles attend Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation’s Angel Ball with a date. The lucky guy turned out to be actor Richard Lawson, Ms. Tina’s boyfriend, and as time went on, we were too thrilled to see that the lovebirds were still going strong. And apparently, things have been going so well between the two that they decided to make things more permanent.

According to TMZ, Knowles, 61, and Lawson, 67, tied the knot during an all-white wedding celebration Sunday in Newport Beach, California. Attendees included Beyoncé, Solange, Jay Z, Alan Ferguson, Blue Ivy, Julez and a host of relatives and friends. The ceremony took place aboard a gorgeous yacht called “Eternity.” Lawson and Knowles have been dating publicly since 2013. It was the second marriage for the both of them.

As for their love story, Tina and Richard have known each other for over thirty years. His sister was actually one of Tina’s best friends, but they did not become romantic until Tina divorced Mathew.

“I’m in a committed relationship with that handsome man!” Tina gushed last October. “And I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long, long time.”

This is amazing news considering what Ms. Tina has been through with her ex. We’re wishing these newlyweds all the best!
